SYMPTOMS

Issues inside the hip joint itself tend to cause pain on the inside of your hip or your groin. If you are experiencing hip pain on the outside of your hip, upper thigh or outer buttock, it is usually caused by problems with muscles, ligaments, tendons and other soft tissues that surround your hip joint. Pain in the hips is often caused by issues and conditions in other parts of the body, such as the lower back and knees. This type of pain is called referred pain.

Leg pain can be constant or it can fluctuate. It can come on suddenly or slowly, and affect the whole leg or a specific, localized area, such as the shin or the knee. This pain can also have many different qualities — stabbing, sharp, dull, aching or tingling. Some leg pain is simply annoying, but more-severe leg pain can affect your ability to walk or to put weight on your leg.
